Loyola Marymount University and its commencement speaker were featured this weekend along with a handful of other universities in a CBS Evening News roundup of the “words of wisdom” that were shared this spring with the graduating class of 2010.
The LMU ceremony was teamed with the likes of those at United States Military Academy, Boston University, Emory University and Barnard College, as graduates heard notable figures, said CBS News anchor Harry Smith, “share what they have learned with the Class of 2010.”
And this week, CNN.com identified the William H. Hannon Library as one of “10 stand out buildings” in new American architecture. The library is included in a slide show on the CNN site.
The CBS story showed a portion of President Obama’s commencement address at West Point and then Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick at LMU, where he told thousands assembled in the Sunken Garden that “we need pragmatic and idealistic innovators today, in spite of the crisis around us, and maybe, most especially, because of it.” Patrick has a strong connection to LMU. His wife attended Loyola Law School and they both were at the undergraduate commencement to celebrate with his nephew, who graduated on May 7.
The speakers featured in the CBS story spoke of aspirations and making your mark in the world, but they were also often very personal and sometimes drew a tear. Witness Meryl Streep pluck a thousand heart strings as she told Barnard College students: “You know you don’t have to be famous. You just have to make your mother and father proud of you. And you already have.”
