KXLU 88.9 FM, the student-run radio station at Loyola Marymount University, is now available as an app for the Apple iPhone and iPad.
The KXLU app was built in collaboration with LMU’s Web, New Media and Design group, and went live on March 25. It live-streams the station’s broadcast and offers other features, including a calendar of music events, news and photos.
“It’s been a really good outlet for people to listen to KXLU in more than just our 30-mile radius,” said general manager Megan Dembkowski, an LMU senior. “We’re always trying to think of ways to step it up and increase our presence.”
KXLU is a rarity in Los Angeles, where many college radio stations are staffed by professionals rather than students. Founded in 1957, KXLU broadcasts an eclectic mix of music, and its DJs and programs are regularly featured in local publications’ “Best of Los Angeles” lists.
The free app has already been downloaded more than 600 times. “The stream is solid, it sounds good, and it’s great for us at the station to be able to listen in on our phones no matter where we are.”
