Loyola Marymount University golfer Greg Moss, a recent summa cum laude graduate in economics, has been named Mike Gilleran Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the West Coast Conference.
Moss made the Dean’s List his last four semesters at LMU, and graduated in May with a 3.85 GPA. He also won this year’s Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Economics Award, given to an economics major who has written an outstanding term paper or honors project.
On the golf course, Moss won the 2009 WCC men’s championship, held at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo this April.
Moss also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and helped to collect shoes for the WCC Soles4Souls drive at LMU, and worked with the L.A. Regional Special Olympics and Neighborhood Youth Association.
“The West Coast Conference member institutions’ mission is to promote the ideals of leadership not only on the field, but also within the classroom and in the community,” said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich, who also announced Pepperdine’s Julie Rubenstein as Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. “Gregory and Julie have exhibited those characteristics throughout their college careers and I am proud to recognize them as this year’s scholar -athletes.”
Moss is the seventh LMU student-athlete to be honored by the WCC, joining Kate Murray (women’s basketball – 2004), Jeff Kovar (men’s soccer – 2003), Michael Cortez (cross country – 2001), Clemens Philippi (men’s soccer – 1999), Tracy Holman (volleyball – 1998) and Sheri Brown (women’s basketball – 1994).
