Loyola Marymount University has earned a spot on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary community service effort by its students during the 2008 school year.
LMU’s Center for Service and Action was named to the Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service for student involvement with various programs, both domestic and international. The Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation, in collaboration with the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.
“Being selected to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is a wonderful recognition for LMU and the Center for Service and Action,” said Pam Rector, director of the center. “LMU and CSA encourage students to have direct personal contact with the poor and marginalized through service opportunities and community-based learning courses.”
The Center for Service and Action was founded in 2000 to promote, coordinate and supervise volunteer service by Loyola Marymount University undergraduates. Today, the program offers a variety of service opportunities for LMU students with a database of over 350 nonprofit organizations.
Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. LMU’s selection was based on the strength and innovation of its service projects, its percentage of student participation in service activities, its incentives for service and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.
